Typhoon Fung-Wong Claims Two Lives, Prompts Evacuations in Philippines

(MENAFN) At least two people lost their lives as Typhoon Fung-Wong pummeled the Philippines on Monday, prompting the preemptive evacuation of approximately 1.4 million residents.

"As for casualties, there were reports, but it is subject to validation," Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, an official with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), told reporters.

Authorities confirmed that one fatality resulted from drowning, while another occurred due to a structural collapse in northern Luzon. Two additional individuals were reported injured.

The storm destroyed nearly 100 homes and inflicted damage on around 1,000 more.

Power outages affected nearly three million households on Sunday, with restoration assessments ongoing, a news agency reported, citing the National Electrification Administration. Around 50 transmission lines remained down on Monday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration downgraded Fung-Wong from super typhoon status earlier in the day.

In its Monday advisory, the Malaysian Meteorological Department stated that the typhoon was detected southwest of Vigan City, moving west-northwest at 30 kilometers (18 miles) per hour with maximum winds of 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour, according to the state-run news agency Bernama.

"This condition may cause strong winds and rough seas over the South China Sea," the department added, issuing warnings for several Malaysian regions about thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds.
